Shocks and ring in the barred spiral galaxy NGC1530
We present new CO(1–0) and HCN(1–0) observations of the barred spiral galaxy NGC1530 at resolutions of 1.8′′ and 3.6′′ respectively. Both CO and HCN are abundant in the nucleus, where we detect two strong, curved shock fronts curling around a possible nuclear ring. The ring is clumpy and may be elongated along the bar. The kinematics of the gas can be fit with a model with infall motions up to ...
متن کاملNewton OBSERVATIONS OF THE SPIRAL GALAXY M 74 ( NGC
The face-on spiral galaxy M 74 (NGC 628) was observed by XMM-Newton on 2002 February 2. In total, 21 sources are found in the inner 5 from the nucleus (after rejection of a few sources associated to foreground stars). Hardness ratios suggest that about half of them belong to the galaxy. The higher-luminosity end of the luminosity function is fitted by a power-law of slope −0.8. This can be inte...
متن کاملA barred spiral at the centre of the giant elliptical radio galaxy Centaurus A ?
We report observations at mid-infrared and sub-millimeter wavelengths of Centaurus A (Cen A, NGC 5128), the giant elliptical galaxy that harbors the closest radio loud Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) to Earth. The dust emission from the deep interior of Cen A reveals a bisymmetric structure with a diameter of 5 (5 kpc), centred at the AGN. This structure is remarkably similar to that of a barred ...
متن کاملA survey of the Wolf-Rayet population of the barred, spiral galaxy NGC1313⋆
We present a VLT/FORS1 survey of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars in the spiral galaxy NGC1313. In total, 94 WR candidate sources have been identified from narrow-band imaging. Of these, 82 have been spectroscopically observed, for which WR emission features are confirmed in 70 cases, one of which also exhibits strong nebular He ii λ4686 emission. We also detect strong nebular He ii λ4686 emission within ...
متن کاملDynamical modelling of a remarkable four - armed barred spiral galaxy ESO 566 - 24
ESO 566-24 is an extraordinary barred galaxy, which has four regularly spaced spiral arms in blue light images. This type of four-armed spiral structure, which is rare among the spiral population, is clearly seen also in near-infrared images, and thus is present in the old stellar population. We have constructed dynamical models of ESO 566-24 in order to understand the cause of its four-armed s...
